Gur-Khazad, The Great Cleaver

Slot none; Aura strong evocation and transmutation; CL 18th; Weight 12 lbs.

Once wielded by the dwarven hero and king Ghurauk Stonehelm during the time of the Great Battle long ago, Gur-Khazad, The Great Cleaver was painstakingly forged by dwarven smiths from dwarven blue steel over the span of a full year. Once completed, it was heavily enchanted by high clerics of both Orin Stoneforger and Varu Hammerhaft to defeat the Great Orcish Horde of Zhulgak the Destroyer. Gur-Khazad is a +5 defiant impervious keen goblinoid bane greataxe, forged with the soul purpose of slaying those of the goblinoid races, but more specifically those of orcish blood.

Gur-Khazad's true purpose is to defeat foes of the goblin race, but more specifically orcs and those that share their blood. Against all goblinoid races (goblins, hobgoblins, etc.), Gur-Khazad functions as a bane weapon (+2 better enhancement bonus, +2d6 extra damage), but when wielded by a dwarf and used against creatures of orcish blood (orcs, half orcs, and orogs), the weapon’s enhancement bonus is +4 better than its actual bonus, and deals an extra 4d6 points of damage against such foes.

The wielder of Gur-Khazad can use the following spell-like abilities.
  • At will–detect metal, detect secret doors, stone tell
  • 3/daystomp, stone call, stoneshape
  • 1/day–divine power, stoneskin
Gur-Khazad also functions as bastion boots and boots of the vengeful behir.

Acid Resistance (Ex)

While held, the wielder gains resist acid 10. This resistance increases to 20 if the wielders is 12th level or Hit Dice, and to 30 if 18th level or Hit Dice.

Artificer’s Touch (Sp)

The wielder can cast mending at will, using his character level or Hit Dice as the caster level to repair damaged objects. In addition, he can cause damage to objects and construct creatures by striking them with a melee touch attack. Objects and constructs take 1d6 points of damage +1 for every two character levels or Hit Dice he possesses. This attack bypasses an amount of damage reduction and hardness equal to the wielder's character level or Hit Dice. The wielder can use this ability 3 times per day.

Body of the Guardian (Sp)

Once per week, the wielder can assume a metal form, similar to the iron body spell.

Deeper Vision (Ex/Su)

The wielder is able to see in the darkness and gains darkvision up to 60 feet. If the wielder already has darkvision, the range is doubled. The wielder can also gains see in darkness ability.

Lost for many centuries, Gur-Khazad was rediscovered in an ancient and powerfully enchanted vault with a number of other artifacts by the heroes of the Off-Worlder War; Odorian Lightbringer, Wu Yan Ravenhill, Aragast Anadriel, and Blackroot Brambleburr. Shortly after its discovery, it was passed into the hands of their friend and ally, the giant dwarven warrior and smith Farak Thunderstrike who wielded it throughout the Off-Worlder War, and continues to until this day, despite his age.
